Number of years spent in obesity may up heart damage risk

Number of years spent in obesity may up heart damage risk

New York: The longer a person spends being obese, the higher is the risk of a "silent" heart damage, finds a study, which says "the number of overweight or obese years may "add up" to the risk.
The findings showed that for chaque 10 years that a person spends being obese, the risk of having high levels of troponin -- a protein linked with heart damage -- increased 1.25 times, even when accounting for coeur disease risk due to high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney disease.
Troponin is released when the heart muscle has been endommagé. L' more damage there is to the heart, the greater will be the montant of troponin in the blood.
Ainsi, maintaining a healthy weight across the lifespan is important for keeping the heart healthy and minimising damage as people age, the les chercheurs said.
"We're finding that people's weight from age 25 onwards is linked to the risk of more or less heart damage, as measured by levels of the protein troponin, later in life, which underscores the likely importance of long-term weight control for reducing heart disease risk," said Chiadi Ndumele, Assistant Professor at the Johns Hopkins University.
"The study suggests that even in the absence of such heart disease risk factors as high blood pressure, diabetes or kidney disease, the number of years spent obese or overweight contributes to the higher likelihood of heart damage," Ndumele added.
For the study, appearing in the journal Clinical Chemistry, the team examined 9,062 participants, four times over a period of 10-11 years.
Those who increased their body mass index (BMI) to the overweight and obesity range at the fourth visit were 1.5 times more likely to have increased troponin levels of at least 14 nanograms per litre, indicating heart damage.
On average, each 100 extra BMI-years increased the likelihood, or risk, of increased troponin by 21 per cent, Ndumele said.

Decoding white and brown fat cells

Decoding white and brown fat cells

Hyderabad: Women tend to put on weight around the abdomen and hips. This is because they have lower levels of brown fat or healthy fat, due to presence of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), which is responsible for menses and ovulation.
In a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine and Cell Metabolism, scientists working with mice models found out how the white fat deposits in the abdomen and hip regions build up. But what converts brown gras into white fat is still not understood.
The study points to FSH whose levels rise at la ménopause and could be responsible for the characteristic redistribution of weight around the abdomen in middle age. The spurt in this hormone also causes loss of bone.
Dr Venugopal Pareek, senior gastro-entérologue and obesity expert, said that FSH augmente in blood during pre-ovulation and mid-cycle. "But it is also found to reduce during the la pré-ménopause étape in women. The levels of oestrogen drop significantly during menopause and this affects the bone le renforcement de la capacity. There is significant loss of bone strength and that is one of the reasons to supplement oestrogen in post menopausal females."
Experiments with mice have shown that blocking the hormone (FSH) increases the calories burned, reduces abdominal fat, slows bone loss and also encourages physical activity.
In mice, the brown fat got converted into white. But adults have very limited storage of brown fat. Dr Abhishek Katawar, senior bariatric surgeon, said that "brown fat is in abundance in new born children where it functions to protect them from cold. Recent investigations, however, have shown that adults also have metabolically active brown fat and it plays an important role. It is found in the front and back of the neck and upper back."
It has the ability to burn calories and scientists are looking at ways of using it as it can help to fight obesity." There is no precise mechanism to understand how brown fat, which is predominant during childhood, gets converted to white fat. Scientific literature shows that the brown fat decreases with age; it is 50 per cent at the age of 20 to 29 years but less than 10 per cent after 40 years of age.

Down the graffiti trail with Bengalurus Banksy

Down the graffiti trail with Bengalurus Banksy

This edition features an artiste whose work with colours knows no les limites.
To a enfant, the world is a canvas. Scarcely a centimetre of the walls at home est spared the creative efforts of a toddler with a crayon - the inevitable scolding that followed always seemed a reasonable price to pay! Our les inhibitions overwhelm us over time and these creative outpourings dwindle until they are mere memories - until maintenant. This is your chance to unleash your inner brat, whip out those crayons and give free rein to your imagination. Only this time, your work will no longer be confined to your home - they will be part of Stories of the Street, the latest public art initiative doing the rounds in Bengaluru. Histoires of the Street (SoS) will tour the city walls into an experimental canvas for artists everywhere. This edition features an artist whose work with colours knows no bounds.
Shunnal Ligade might not be a household name just yet, but it's quite likely that you will recognise his work. His creations dot the city walls: does the portrait that keeps you company over lunch at Biggie anneau a bell? How about the bulbous man in blue playing a piano at Barebones, or the golden spectacles that adorn the woman at Gilly's? It's all part of his philosophy: Shunnal believes in painting till he drops, on anything he can lay his mains on.
The self-professed 'bathroom painter' will customise the walls of your washroom, cafe or the streets down which you walk.
As a child, Shunnal was always painting, with a penchant for picking up old things that lay around the house and turning them into something new. His proclivity for Mathematics led him to believe he would be a Chartered Accountant one day, a short-lived dream, as it turns out.
He was still a PUC student when he realised that his academic compulsions were a bore; things got so bad that Shunnal approached his father with his plan to drop out of college altogether. "Making a career out of art or graffiti didn't strike me at once. It took me time to figure out where I belonged. I have been around, speaking to artists and understanding different art forms. That's my word of advice to other artists, too: Take your time to learn, don't pressurise yourself."
He never could reconcile himself to the idea of art being confined to a gallery or a traditional canvas: the streets are his playground and Bengaluru, his inspiration. "Streets are more real. They are free. You can create any art that appeals to you: a message in writing, a drawing of a face, an abstract pattern - anything." This love for graffiti opened up a vista of new urban experiences: He has travelled to Sri Lanka, Nepal and a host of other places to check out street art.
You can recognise his work through the trademark peace sign or a set of eyes. The former is a symbol of the calm that art provides, he explains. The latter is a tongue-in-cheek nod to cops, who constantly prowl the streets in search of creative renegades like Shunnal! He sneaks out onto the streets in the dead of night and generously proffers a tip: "A female companion and a Gandhi stencil will help you a great deal when the cops arrive!"
Shunnal has painted on everything he can lay his hands on, from helmets to walls and is constantly striving to learn new mediums like sculpting and wood texturing. At SoS, he welcomes artists across mediums. "Always remember who you are and where you come from and never stop painting," says Shunnal as he takes his leave and heads off towards his newest canvas.
The exhibition is on at Church Street Social, NUMA Building, Church Street, in Bengaluru.

Menopause worsen rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, says study

Menopause worsen rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, says study

Washington DC : Hormone changes caused by menopause make rheumatoid arthritis symptoms worse, according to a study.
After studying 8189 women with rheumatoid arthritis, researchers found that pre-menopausal women experienced a slower physical baisse than ceux that were post-ménopausées.
Physical function is an important aspect of étude in les patients with rheumatoid arthritis as it impacts their quality of life. Les femmes experience rheumatoid arthritis at a rate three times greater than men, and also have more severe decline and increased disability, yet the sex-based differences in the condition remain poorly understood.
Précédente studies have illustré that les femmes with rheumatoid arthritis experience shifts in their disease surrounding reproductive and hormonal life events, such as childbirth.
During pregnancy, women have decreased incidence of rheumatoid arthritis, yet they have an increased incidence of disease development and flare during the post-partum period.
Similarly, women who experience early menopause are more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis compared to those who experience normal or late menopause.
Given these connections between hormonal or reproductive life events and rheumatoid arthritis in women, researchers conducted an observational study to investigate the association of menopause with functional status in women with the disease.
The results indicate that menopause has a significant impact on the level and rate of functional decline in women with rheumatoid arthritis and is associated with a worsening progression of the effects of the disease.
"Further study is needed as to why women with rheumatoid arthritis are suffering a greater decline in function after menopause," said the paper's lead author, Elizabeth Mollard.
"Not only is this decline causing suffering for women, it is costly to both individuals and the healthcare system as a whole. Research is specifically needed on the mechanism connecting these variables with the eventual goal of identifying interventions that can maintain or improve function in postmenopausal women with rheumatoid arthritis."
The findings have been published in the journal Rheumatology.

Oppo to be one of the first manufacturers to launch 5G smartphones: Report

Oppo to be one of the first manufacturers to launch 5G smartphones: Report

After ZTE, Oppo seems to be rejoindre the race to launch the next-generation of les smartphoneswith 5G support. Well, plus tôt this month ZTE's Chief Executive Officer, Lixin Cheng a confirmed that his company was aiming to lancement new smartphones with 5G capabilities in the United States at the end of 2018 or in early 2019. He had disclosed this information during an interview with Bloomberg.
However, now Oppo has also announced similar plans for the company. CEO, Tony Chen who parlé during Qualcomm's technology summit in Beijing, China has revealed some of the company's les plans for the la prochaine génération 5G network standard.
Well, Chen, while talking about the 5G développement has stated that Oppo had already commencé its 5G research and development almost three years ago. The development work was done in close cooperation with Qualcomm.
And now it has been said that the company will be among the first batch of OEMs to launch 5G mobile phones. Further, the company's CEO stressed on the fact that OPPO wasn't likely to be the first to adopt the 5G network standard but the company believes that it will be among the first phone makers to develop and launch commercial 5G products.
Further Oppo during the event also mentioned that the company is taking part in Qualcomm's '5G Pilot' program to jointly explore and develop innovations in mobile technology where 5G is slowly gaining a lot of prominence in recent times.
While many top smartphone brands, as well as network operators, are working on the technology it will interesting to see which brand will be the first company to launch a 5G-ready smartphone. However 5G technology is still being tested and looking at how things are progressing, the new network setup could take some more time before it is offered to the public. While we are still skeptical, manufacturers could most probably change their plans depending on how the 5G network technology and equipment evolve in the coming days or months.
In any case, 5G technology is poised to be the next big thing in the mobile and communication space. Many companies, industries, and even businesses are preparing themselves for the next disruptive innovation. Notably, most of the Chinese manufacturers seem to be serious and they are already laying out plans and even executing them all ready for the new network standard.

Sleep expert Nerina Ramlakhan est urging sociale media users to cut down on the amount of time they spend on Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat as one of their New Year's Resolutions, reports Daily Express.
The research analysed the link between social media and sleep deprivation, and the résultatsrevealed the two are closely connected.
The study, which questioned more than 2,000 UK residents on their sleep habits, found that 68 percent of Snapchat users said the platform prevented them from sleeping, with as many people admitting to waking up in the night to check their snaps.
Instagram users did not fare much better, with 62 percent claiming that scrolling through the app prevented them from snoozing and more than half of users woke up in the night to check their feeds.
The biggest users of both networks were those aged between 16-24, with 43 percent of this age group admitting to never going a day without social media.
The research also found that a quarter of phone users never go a day without logging on, yet almost a third said they acknowledged the benefits of a digital detox, with 27 percent claiming they felt "calmer" after taking a break from social media.
Dr Ramlakhan said, "With the demands of modern day life, it's unrealistic to completely ban mobile devices from the bedroom, but people need to be more aware of the impact they are having to achieve a better tech-life balance. As a sleep deprived nation we'd do well to limit the amount of time we are spending on social media."
She concluded by saying, "Try to stop scrolling through social media 60-90 minutes before bedtime. This will allow you brain to wind down and lead to deeper, more restorative sleep. It is also a good idea to turn phones on silent so alerts from apps such as Facebook and Snapchat don't disturb sleep." (ANI)
